Shoebox Stories

Friday, January 17, 2020, 7:00 PM

Dairy Center
2590 Walnut Street
Boulder, CO  80302

Shoebox Stories is a story-holding project where we gather together and stand in another person’s shoes by reading aloud their story, saying their words, and holding, for a moment, the weight that they carry. Motus Theater will celebrate and recognize Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s fight for equality and civil rights this year by asking local leaders in Boulder County to stand in other people’s shoes. Community leaders chosen by the Youth Opportunities Advisory Board, Boulder JCC, Center of the American West, Boulder Chamber, and League of Women Voters will be joining us on stage to read the stories of undocumented leaders, and amplifying their stories.

On January 17th, four LWVBC members --Jeannette Hillery, Kay Marsh, Emma Piller and Lauren Modery -- will read stories of undocumented migrants in our community. Audience members will have the opportunity to listen and reflect upon the stories. For League, this event can help deepen our understanding of immigration issues and immigrants in our community and enable us to be effective advocate on issues that impact everyone in our community regardless of  documentation status.

Let's pack the auditorium on January 17th, with League members, our family and friends! Tickets are
available online at http://tickets.thedairy.org/online/ShoeboxStories.

Making Votes Matter
Monday, January 20th, 2-3:30pm
Frasier Meadows Assembly Room (4th floor)
350 Ponca Place, Boulder

On January 20th, the Voting Methods Team of the Boulder County League of Women Voters will discuss the problems with the familiar Vote-for-One, Plurality method of voting. In a colorful PowerPoint slide show, they will focus on three better voting methods which could be used in single-winner elections. The Team will show that using better voting methods helps make votes matter, and as a result will give voters more expressiveness and greater voting satisfaction. In a hands-on demonstration, audience members will get a chance to experience the differences among Plurality, Ranking, Approval and Scoring methods by choosing their dessert preference from tasty, homemade samples.
