Recent developments in the Boulder County Minimum Wage effort

Peggy Leech | Published on 8/28/2023

In early August, the Boulder County Commissioners announced their plan to raise the minimum wage from $13.65 to $15.70/hour on January 1, 2024. This would cover unincorporated Boulder County, which includes Gunbarrel, Niwot, Hygiene, and various rural areas. See the article here.

In mid-August, the Town of Erie agreed to participate in the stakeholder process for raising the minimum wage. Members of the Boulder County Consortium of Cities who are now working on minimum wage include Boulder, Longmont, Lafayette, Louisville, and now Erie.

The cities who are involved plan to wait until January 1, 2025, to implement a minimum wage plan. In reaction to the County Commissioners’ plan for an increase on January 1, 2024, the Boulder City Council considered the earlier implementation date at a study session on August 24. In a 5-4 vote, they decided to stay with the 2025 implementation date.

LWVBC sent a letter to the Boulder City Council ahead of their August 24 study session. Download the letter here.

Upcoming events:

October 12—County Commissioners Town Hall in Niwot about minimum wage.

November 2—County Commissioners Public Hearing before enacting the official minimum wage law for the county.
