The First Amendment is being tested like never before. Can it withstand the pressures from politics, dark money and artificial intelligence?
The First documentary looks back at the turbulent history of the First Amendment and the challenges it faces today. Co-hosted by NBC News senior correspondent andCU alumnus Tom Costello and Colorado Public Radio’s Bazi Kanani, the documentary traces its journey from the founding era through the moments that have tested it most, from the Alien and Sedition Act of 1798 to landmark Supreme Court decisions including Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community Schools District and New York Times v. Sullivan.
Through the voices of journalists, historians, constitutional scholars, and people whose lives were forever changed by its protections, including Mary Beth Tinker, Martin Baron and Dean Baquet, The First examines an idea that has never stood still. Each generation has interpreted it differently. Each has tested its limits.Yet the responsibility remains the same: preserving freedoms for a future no one can predict.
Join Costello, Kanani and film directorBrian Malone for a post-screening discussion.
Pizza and beverages will be provided.
