SAVE act fails in the Senate

Update: The SAVE America Act has failed to advance in the US Senate.
We can breath a sigh of relief for the moment, but this bill could be brought back to the floor with a procedural vote. Those who predict such things advise us that a procedural vote is unlikely. However, even if this bill is not resurrected in its most recent form, many of its provisions could be inserted into other legislation.
The League of Women Voters of the United Statesopposesthis bill. It and others in a suite of proposed legislation would
  • require proof of citizenship to register to vote
  • require photo ID to vote
  • impose significant penalties on election officials
  • require regular purging of the election lists
  • expose voter data
While those provisions may seem commonplace, they impose significant burdens for the many people who do not currently possess a passport or easy access to their birth certificates. Registering or re-registering by mail or online would be replaced with in-person registration. Difficulties for those whose names no longer match birth certificates would be compounded. States would be required to purge their voting rolls and to provide their voters' data to federal databases that track immigration status and other groups.
Our Senators have consistently opposed this bill. Thank them now and urge them to remain vigilant:
