Action Alert

Documentary proof of citizenship (DPOC) supporters are making every effort to impose requirements for voters to prove their citizenship when they register to vote through any possible channel. The Make Elections Great Again Act was introduced in the House last week to require photo ID to vote, require DPOC to register to vote, change voter list maintenance in states, require mail-in ballots to be received by election day, ban universal vote by mail, and more.
For months, communities across the country, in Minnesota and beyond, have lived in terror as federal immigration enforcement agents have patrolled, surveilled, detained, disappeared, injured, and killed civilians, as well as denied people’s constitutional rights by attacking and arresting peaceful protestors. Yet Congress — our elected officials — has played a pivotal role in funding and enabling this government-manufactured crisis, and they must act to stop these attacks.

Voting Methods Team

Our LWVBC Voting Methods position states, “Candidate vote counts in multi-winner plurality contests should be reported as a percent of ballots for better public understanding of support for candidates." Colorado’s Election Night Reporting software misleadingly only reports percent of the total vote. And unfortunately, the county clerks typically don't report crucial information (the number of ballots cast in each contest), until after certification, making it impossible to know the rate of undervotes or overvotes, or the average number of votes per ballot in council races, until after the audit.
If we had a presidential election based on the national popular vote instead of on Electoral College victories in each state, then, especially in a close presidential contest, voter turnout would increase because people would feel like their vote really matters and is visible in the final tally.
We’ve been reporting about the proposed Final-4 Voting initiative for months now. Eugene, Oregon and Boulder, Colorado are similar-sized university cities in the western U.S. They are typically regarded as peer cities. They recently held elections revolving around a new voting method. The ballot contests and results were quite different, but the campaigning had some similarities.

In our previous article, we highlighted the misleading nature of reporting multi-winner city council contests, and advocated for a shift to presenting a candidate’s support as a percentage of ballots rather than a percentage of votes. Continuing this discussion, we delve deeper into how our current reporting approach can hide serious ballot design flaws, which can be responsible for changing the outcomes of elections! These examples underscore the crucial need for consistent and transparent reporting of election results.
