Support the Dream Act

Published on 9/13/2017

(Daily Camera, September 13th, 2017)

By rescinding the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, the Trump administration is unnecessarily disrupting the lives of, and instilling fear in roughly 800,000 young people who call America home. This menacing act could rip families apart and profoundly diminish our communities.

A responsible immigration policy should be based on sound humanitarian principles, focused on keeping families together, and should be responsive to the economic and educational needs and opportunities in our communities and nation as a whole.

The League of Women Voters of Boulder County (LWVBC) supports and celebrates the rights of all Americans to participate fully in our democracy. We affirm our national LWV position on immigration, which supports policies that provide an efficient pathway to citizenship for immigrants, and opposes deporting unauthorized immigrants who have no history of criminal activity.

LWVBC calls on the U.S. Congress to support the Dream Act, which will enable undocumented youth to thrive as students, workers, family members, and engaged citizens. We applaud Colorado Sens.Gardner and Bennett for pledging to support this bill and are grateful to Boulder County governments and those state elected officials who are enforcing positions that enhance the safety and peace of mind of DACA recipients, their families and friends and all of us living together in Boulder County.

LWVBC pledges to DACA youth that we will continue to work for just, equitable immigration policies that support your rights as civically engaged residents and your ability to become U.S. citizens and to fulfill your own dreams — whatever they may be.

We see you, and we support you. You belong here.
