The Energizing Young Voters Initiative has put together a 30 minute presentation to motivate the largest block of nonvoters - 19-23 year old Americans - to VOTE! It is led by Pirie Jensen and includes Jenny Bisha, PhD and Claudia Imhoff.

The City of Longmont will be having the community’s annual Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) festival on Saturday, October 14th, from 11 am to 3pm, in the Downtown area of 4th Avenue and Main Street. The festival kicks off several community activities and exhibits that will occur during the remaining weeks of October and when the Day of the Dead is traditionally observed on November 1st and November 2nd.

An important component in performing the League’s mission of informing and empowering voters is VOTE411.org. The website platform has many functions and services, with the primary focus being the League’s non-partisan voters’ guide. At the local level, the League of Women Voters of Boulder County takes part in providing resource information to VOTE411 applicable to Boulder County voters.

In early August, the Boulder County Commissioners announced their plan to raise the minimum wage from $13.65 to $15.70/hour on January 1, 2024. This would cover unincorporated Boulder County, which includes Gunbarrel, Niwot, Hygiene, and various rural areas.

In recent years, LWVBC has been successfully involved in Boulder and Longmont to help increase the wages of municipal workers and contractors to a living wage. Since 2019, Colorado law has allowed local governments to raise the minimum wage for all workers, not just municipal employees.

We all just participated in our annual November election, and the Voting Methods Team is here to analyze the election through the lens of voting methods. Boulder County election results are available here.

Let’s tackle some of the questions about local elections that we’ve heard during this election season. We’ll cover questions on Boulder (and touching on Broomfield), Longmont, and the St Vrain Valley School District (SVVSD), and conclude with general questions that pertain to multiple jurisdictions, including the Boulder Valley School District (BVSD).

"Candidate vote counts in multi-winner plurality contests should be reported as a percent of ballots for better public understanding of support for candidates."  So says our updated LWVBC’s Voting Methods position.  In the November election, Boulder County had 4 multi-winner contests: Boulder Council, Lafayette Council, Superior Home Rule Charter Commission and a vote-for-up-to-2 contest for Louisville Council Ward 3.

“Ranked Choice Voting” gets most of the attention when it comes to voting methods, including in Colorado. This fall Boulder and Broomfield – and, starting in 2025, Fort Collins – will use the single-winner Instant-Runoff Voting (IRV) form of RCV.
